Glens Falls scored nine runs in three innings and took advantage of some Mohawks defensive mistakes to pull off a 10-8 win Tuesday night at Shuttleworth Park.
Danny Oliveri (Triton) led the visitors, going 3-for-5 with two singles, a ground rule triple, three runs scored, and three RBIs. Mark Powell (Bucknell) came off the bench and went 3-for-3 with two singles, a double, two runs scored, and three RBIs in a game that saw 31 hits combined. Hunter Tackett (Auburn) paced the Mohawks, going 2-for-3 with a home run, double, run, and three RBIs.
Amsterdam opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a one-out, two-run home run by Tackett. Glens Falls made it 2-1 when Oscar Rodriguez (St. Thomas) doubled, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a balk by Amsterdam starter Brad Schaenzer (Kentucky).
The Mohawks added on in the bottom of the 5th when Riley Mahan (Kentucky) and Gage West (Florida State) reached on back-to-back singles. Both runners advanced on an errant pickoff throw and Mahan scored on Drew Freedman’s (Wake Forest) sacrifice fly to center. Two batters later, Tackett doubled to drive in West to make it 4-1 Amsterdam.
The Dragons responded in the sixth when Oliveri scored on Jake Vieth’s (Tacoma CC) double and Powell scored on an RBI single by Tyler Phillips (Herkimer CC) to cut the lead to one. The offense continued in the seventh when the Dragons sent ten batters to the plate and included a ground rule triple when Oliveri lined one to left and Mahan intentionally tossed his glove at the ball. The play scored two runs and put Glens Falls up 5-4. Powell’s RBI single drove in Oliveri to make it 6-4 Dragons before Powell scored on Vieth’s RBI single.
Glens Falls kept their foot on the gas in the eighth as David Sarmiento (Post University) walked and Miguel Presno (Flagler) singled to lead off. Oliveri singled to score Sarmiento. Presno and Oliveri would score a batter later on Powell’s two-RBI double to make it 10-4 Glens Falls.
Amsterdam tried to rally in the ninth, but came up short. Tyler Kirkpatrick (Marist) drove in Brendan Tracy (Fairfield) with a one-out double and scored two batters later on Macy Holdsworth’s (Indiana) single to cut the lead to four. Aidan McDermott (St. John’s) and Freedman followed with singles and a throwing error allowed Holdsworth to score. Justin Yurchak (Wake Forest) singled to bring in McDermott before the Dragons finally shut the door.
The win went to Drue Brooks (Felician) after he went 2 innings, giving up three hits, and no runs as he improved to 2-0. The loss went to Jake Mielock (Tampa) who fell to 1-2 after allowing four runs on three hits in an inning of work.
Glens Falls (12-11) will enter July having won six of their last seven and will face the Adirondack Trail Blazers at East Field at 7 p.m. Wednesday night. The Mohawks (17-6) have now lost two straight and look to bounce back Wednesday night at home against the Elmira Pioneers at 6:35 p.m.
