ELMIRA, NY- After losing to the Amsterdam Mohawks earlier in the season 11-2, the Pioneers would take one back at historic Dunn Field winning 16-6. The Pioneers really broke the game wide open with a five run fifth inning and an eight run seventh as the Mohawks could not find an answer even though both teams went toe to toe each obtaining ten hits throughout the game.
Amsterdam would score first in their first at bat as Mohawk Justin Yurchak (Wake Forest), who reached on a single, would score after a fielding error by Brian Barefoot (Louisiana-Monroe).
In the bottom of the third, Elmira would strike back to tie the game as Justin Hayes (Old Dominion) would reach on a walk. On one pitch, Hayes would steal second and take third on a wild pitch by Evy Rubial (Notre Dame). Another wild pitch to the backstop would allow Hayes to run home, making the score 1-1.
The Mohawks would take the lead again in the fifth as a Hunter Tackett (Auburn) single would score Justin Yurchak who doubled to right center. But the Mohawks would not hold the lead for long as the Pioneers would score five runs in response. A Keegan Maronpot (Wake Forest) 2 RBI single and Hayden Kelly’s (Florida State) three run home run would give Elmira their first lead of the night 6-2.
The Mohawks would quickly respond with three runs in the sixth thanks to a Macy Holdsworth (Indiana) 2 RBI single and a sacrifice fly to left field by Riley Mahan (Kentucky) which scored in Kyle Dean (BYU). A breakdown by the Amsterdam pitching staff would allow eight runs to score in the seventh inning as Joe Randall (Fairfield) and Nygeal Andrews (Radford) would each allow four runs to score through walks, hits and wild pitches as the Pioneers stood patient at the plate and would go through their entire lineup and would take a commanding lead of 14-5.
Pioneers would score two more runs in the eight off a RBI Single by Justin Hayes which scored Jordan Bishop (Siena) and a RBI Single by Maronpot who scored in Taylor Hillson (Mansfield). Making the score 16-5. A solo home run by Justin Yurchak would make the score 16-6 but the next three batters would be retired to end the ball game and the Amsterdam’s eight game win streak.
Mike Korchak (Bucknell) gets the win for the Pioneers as he pitched five and two-thirds innings only giving up five runs on nine hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Also making appearances was Tristan Widra (Samford) who kept the Mohawks scoreless in one and one-third inning of work and finishing the game with two hits, one run and two strikeouts was Jake Greer (Samford). Earning the loss for the Mohawks will be Evy Ruibal who pitched five innings and gave up six hits, six runs, walked three and struck out five.
