The Saugerties Stallions used a five-run fifth inning to rally from a one-run deficit and never looked back as they defeated the Amsterdam Mohawks 11-7 on Thursday night at Shuttleworth Park.
Micah Riddick (St. Bonaventure) and Tyler Noe (UMass Lowell) led the Stallions offensively. The pair combined to go 5-for-8 on the night with three singles, two doubles, five runs scored, and four RBIs.
The Mohawks struck first in the contest with three runs in the bottom of the first. Tyler Ungerland (St. Rose), Andrew Rouse (Marist), and Nick Patten (Delaware) provided three consecutive singles to start the game, with the latter plating Ungerland. A wild pitch brought home Rouse and Patten came in to score on Dan Maynard’s (Maryland) RBI groundout.
Saugerties answered in the top of the second. Noe and Riddick started the inning with a walk and single respectively. A wild pitch advanced the runners into scoring position and both scored on RBI groundouts to second by Michael Pfenninger (Manhattan) and Anthony Cruz (Quinnipiac) to make it a 3-2 game.
Amsterdam pushed the lead back to two runs when Brandon Cellucci (Hudson Valley CC) singled, advanced to third on a hit-and-run play, and scored when Ungerland executed a squeeze that resulted in all runners being safe.
In the fifth, the teams combined for eight runs on four errors. After a Carmine Giordano (Franklin Pierce) walk, Brady Fallon (Virginia Wesleyan) reached on a bunt attempt that was misplayed by the pitcher. Alex Thrower (Buffalo) walked to load the bases and Zachary DeThomasis (Hudson Valley CC) came through with an RBI single. Julius Saporito (Quinnipiac) brought Fallon in on a fielder’s choice before Noe singled and Riddick doubled to drive in three more runs.
In the bottom half, Patten reached on an error by the shortstop. Joe Genord (South Florida) reached on an error by the second baseman. Three batters later, following a walk issued to Kyle Sacks (UAlbany) loaded the bases, Nick Schaub (Schenectady County CC) reached on an error by the third baseman, driving in Patten. Cellucci singled to drive in two and the Mohawks managed to get within 8-7.
That was as close as Amsterdam would get. Saugerties added one run in the seventh when Noe scored from second on an RBI single by Pfenninger. The visitors tacked on two more in the ninth when Cruz and Giordano scored on a double by Fallon.
The win went to Moshup Galbraith (Fordham), who pitched four innings in relief of Saugerties starter Caleb Gregg (Hudson Valley CC). Galbraith allowed just one hit, three runs (all unearned), walked one, and struck out two. The loss was charged to Tim Herrin (Indiana) who gave up six runs (five earned) in four innings of work. Herrin struck out four and walked four. The save went to Nathanial Popiel (Dominican College), his first of the season.
Saugerties improved to 2-0 on the season and will look to continue their winning ways Saturday night when they host the Adirondack Trail Blazers at Cantine Memorial Field at 6:30 p.m. The Mohawks (0-2) strive to pick up win number one Friday night at East Field where they meet the Glens Falls Dragons at 7 p.m. The Mohawks will also look to record their first extra base hit of the season, as the team has played 18 innings and recorded 12 singles.
