Box Score

Joe Genord (South Florida) launched a solo home run to center field to give the Mohawks a 7-6 walk-off win over the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs on Friday night at Shuttleworth Park.

The at-bat was Genord’s only plate appearance of the game. Tyler Frank (Florida Atlantic) added a 2-for-4 night with a single, double, run scored, and three RBIs. Tristen Carranza (New Mexico State) also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with two singles and an RBI.

Mohawk Valley scored in the first inning, making it three consecutive games in which the Mohawks have allowed a first inning run. Back-to-back singles from Justin Fowler (Dartmouth) and Tanner Leenknecht (Treasure Valley CC) started the inning. Michael Conti (Fairfield) walked to load the bases before Fowler and Leenknecht scored on back-to-back fielder’s choices to make it 2-0 Mohawk Valley.

The DiamondDawgs added to the lead in the third. Fowler singled to start the inning and was advanced to second on a one-out single by Conti. Mac Crispino (Fairfield) walked to load the bases before Kevin Radziewicz (Fairfield) doubled to make it 4-0. Crispino was gunned down at home trying to make it 5-0 on a relay from Kinneman to Frank to Genord.

The Mohawks broke through in the bottom half. With one out, Chris LaVorgna (Franklin Pierce) and Frank drew back-to-back walks. Carranza singled to center and the ball bounced off the center fielder, allowing two runs to score to make it 4-2.

The lead was cut to one when Brett Kinneman (NC State) led off the bottom of the fourth with an opposite field, solo home run to left field, his first of the season. The Mohawks tied the game an inning later. LaVorgna singled to lead off the inning and was followed by Frank’s double to make it 4-4.

In the eighth, Radziewicz drove a 1-2 pitch over the left field was for a two-run home run after Crispino had been hit by a pitch to make it 6-4 DiamondDawgs.

But the Mohawks would not go away. With one out, Tyler Ungerland (St. Rose) reached on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Dan Maynard (Maryland) walked. Eric Downey (The College at Brockport) came in to pinch run for Maynard and the duo executed a double steal of second and third. Three batters later, Frank singled into center field to drive in both runners before being thrown out at second trying to advance on a throw.

It took until the bottom of the 10th to decide this one. With one out, Genord took a pitch in the dirt before unloading on a 1-0 fastball and sending out over the center field wall to give the Mohawks their 8th win in their last 10 games.

On the mound, Tim Naughton (NC State) picked up the win to improve to 2-0 on the season. Naughton pitched two innings, gave up no hits, walked one, and struck out five. The loss went to Jon Sell (Herkimer CC) who dropped to 1-2 after pitching just 0.1 of an inning in which he allowed one hit, and one run.

The Mohawks and DiamondDawgs meet again on Saturday night when Amsterdam travels to Little Falls where the DiamondDawgs took game one of the season series on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
