Joe Genord (South Florida) provided all the offense the Mohawks would need with a three-run home run in the first inning of Tuesday night’s 9-1 win over the Saugerties Stallions at Shuttleworth Park.

Tim Herrin (Indiana) had another solid outing on the mound. The lefty went six innings, allowed two hits, one run, walked two, and struck out four. Chase Haney (Florida State) made his Mohawks debut, pitching two innings in relief in which he allowed one hit and struck out four.

The Mohawks started off the game with a bang. Back-to-back singles by Chris LaVorgna (Franklin Pierce) and Chris Givin (Xavier) to lead off the inning put runners on the corners. Two batters later, Genord, the PGCBL Player of the Week, took a 1-1 fastball over the center field wall, putting the Mohawks up 3-0.

Andrew Workman (Quinnipiac) responded well and kept the Mohawks at bay for the next six innings. The Stallions were able to plate a run in the top of the fourth when Herrin issued a bases loaded walk to Jacob Yish (Boston College).

Amsterdam put the game out of reach in the eighth. LaVorgna led off with another single as he finished 3-for-5 on the night. He was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before Tyler Frank (Florida Atlantic) worked a walk. Genord followed with a double to plate both runners, giving him five RBIs for the night. Tristen Carranza (New Mexico State) followed with an RBI triple to right center, making it 6-1. After Brett Kinneman (NC State) walked and Nick Patten (Delaware) went down on strikes, Eric Downey (The College at Brockport) lifted a ball to left field that was dropped by the left fielder. Carranza and Kinneman both scored before Downey crossed the plate on Andrew Rouse’s (Marist) single to left.

The win went to Herrin as he improved to 2-1 on the season. The loss went to Workman despite his efforts on the hill. He went 7.1 innings, allowed nine hits, four runs (all earned), and walked none.

Both teams will meet again on Wednesday night as Saugerties will host the Mohawks at Cantine Memorial Field at 6:30 p.m.
