DiamondDawgs Cut Down Mohawks, 7-4

The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs took advantage of three Amsterdam errors and solid pitching to pick up a 7-4 win at Shuttleworth Park on Friday night.

Andrew Turner (LIU-Brookyn) led the DiamondDawgs’ offense with a 3-for-5 night with two singles, a home run, a run scored, and two RBIs. Mike Appel (Central Connecticut State) kept the Mohawks at bay early on, going six innings in which he allowed one hit, one run, walked one, and struck out five.

After threatening in the first, Mohawk Valley scratched across a run in the second. Sean Mazzio (Wagner) singled with one out and was followed by a double by Mike Martinez (Rutgers). Two batters later, Justin Fowler (Dartmouth) reached on an error by the third baseman, which allowed Mazzio to score.

The DiamondDawgs added two runs in the next two innings each. In the third, Kevin Radziewicz (Fairfield) reached on a fielder’s choice. Turner came up two batters later and crushed a home run to left field to make it 3-0 Mohawk Valley. In the fourth, Martinez led off with his second double of the game and scored when Fowler’s fly ball to center was dropped by Brett Kinneman (NC State). After being moved to third on a groundout, Fowler scored when Radziewicz reached on an error by the second baseman.

Amsterdam finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Tristen Carranza (New Mexico State) doubled. Nick Patten (Delaware) followed with a double of his own to plate Carranza and make It 5-1.

The DiamondDawgs would plate another in the seventh. Radziewicz worked a lead-off walk, advanced to second on a groundout by Turner, and scored on a double by Mazzio.

In the bottom half, the Mohawks responded with two of their own. With one out, Chris Givin (Xavier) singled for his first hit of the game. Chris LaVorgna (Franklin Pierce) followed with an RBI triple to left center. Two batters later, Tyler Frank (Florida Atlantic) singled to make it 6-3.

The Mohawks continued to chip away in the eighth. Brett Kinneman (NC State) reached on an error by the pitcher with one out. Dan Maynard (Maryland) followed with a double to left center, scoring Kinneman to make it 6-4. Maynard finished the night 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, and an RBI.

Mohawk Valley added one more in the top of the ninth when Turner singled to score Michael Ketchmark (Dartmouth) from second.

Appel picked up the win to improve to 2-1 on the season. The loss went to Paul Milto (Indiana), who dropped to 1-1 after he pitched four innings, allowed seven hits, five runs (two earned), walked one, and struck out four. The save went to Zachary Vennaro, his third.

The Mohawks had their four-game winning streak snapped and will play to regain first place Saturday night when they travel to Damaschke Field to play the Oneonta Outlaws at 7 p.m. The DiamondDawgs will travel to Bob Bellizzi Field to play the Albany Dutchmen on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
