The Amsterdam Mohawks swept the Oneonta Outlaws by taking advantage of a late solo home run by Tyler Frank (Florida Atlantic) in game one, and a seven-inning, combined no-hitter in game two.
In game one, neither team could get on the board through the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, the Mohawks scratched across a run despite not having a hit. With one out, Frank worked a walk and stole second base. He was advanced to third on a Joe Genord (South Florida) ground out. Frank would score on a wild pitch that resulted in a walk to Tristen Carranza (New Mexico State).
Oneonta responded with a run in the fifth. With two outs, Kyle Ruedisili (Washington and Lee) lifted a fly ball to center that was misplayed and allowed him to go all the way to third. An ensuing wild pitch allowed Ruedisili to score the tying run.
The game stayed knotted at one until the bottom of the sixth. That’s when Frank launched a two-out, solo home run to left to end the no-hitter and provide the winning run.
In game two, Jeff Belge (St. John’s) and Tim Naughton (NC State) combined to throw seven innings of no-hit, scoreless baseball to help Amsterdam win 3-0.
The Mohawks put two runs on the board on Frank’s two-run home run to left, his third in as many games. In the fifth, Nick Patten (Delaware) singled to lead off the inning and stole second. A double play allowed Patten to move up to third before a perfectly placed bunt by Eric Downey (The College at Brockport) allowed everyone to advance safely and the Mohawks took a 3-0 lead.
In game one, the win went to Griffin Roberts (Wake Forest), who pitched two innings in relief of starter Cameron Enck (Maryland). Roberts gave up one hit, walked one, and struck out one to improve to 3-0. The tough luck loss went to Tyler Brown (Northeastern), who dropped to 1-3 despite pitching six innings in which he allowed one hit, two runs, walked three, and struck out four.
For game two, Belge picked up his first win in his first start. He’s now 1-0 after pitching four innings in which he walked three and struck out four. The loss went to Cal Lawrence (Binghamton) who went all six innings, gave up four hits, three runs, walked two, and struck out four. Tim Naughton (NC State) picked up his third save of the season.
With the wins, Amsterdam is now three games ahead of the Outlaws for first place in the East Division. They will have an off day on Wednesday before traveling to Saugerties on Thursday to face the Stallions at 6:30 p.m. Oneonta will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they host the Albany Dutchmen at Damaschke Field at 7 p.m.
