Tristen Carranza (New Mexico State) went a combined 4-for-6 with two singles, two doubles, and six RBIs to lead the Mohawks to a 7-2, 4-2 doubleheader sweep of the Saugerties Stallions Friday night at Shuttleworth Park.

In game one, Amsterdam scored early and never looked back. In the bottom of the first, Chris Givin (Xavier) and Tyler Frank (Florida Atlantic) worked back-to-back one-out walks. After Givin was picked off, Joe Genord (South Florida) singled to score Frank from second. Nick Patten (Delaware) and Teddy Cillis (Hofstra) followed with singles to load the bases. Carranza followed with a three-run double to put the Mohawks up 4-0.

In the top of the third, Julius Saporito (Quinnipiac) led off with a solo home run to right to cut the deficit to 4-1. In the bottom half, Givin singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Frank walked. Patten doubled home both runners two batters later to make it 6-1 before scoring on Carranza’s single that pushed the lead to six.

Saugerties would score one more in the fifth when Micah Riddick (St. Bonaventure) singled and came around to score on Richie Barrella’s (Manhattan) single.

In game two, Saugerties took the lead twice before seeing it slip away. Brian Dempsey (Boston College) singled with two outs and scored one batter later on a Michael Pfenninger (Manhattan) double.

The Mohawks answered quickly when Andruw Gazzola (Stony Brook) walked and went station-to-station before scoring on Carranza’s single to tie the game at one.

Saugerties retook the lead in the fourth. Jacob Yish (Boston College) singled with one away and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Carmine Giordano (Franklin Pierce) doubled down the right field line to score Yish and put the Stallions up 2-1.

The game unraveled in the bottom half of the fourth. With one out and one on, Andrew Rouse (Marist) struck out on a pitch in the dirt, but the catcher’s throw to first was errant. Dan Maynard (Maryland) scored from second on the play and Rouse tried to go to third, resulting in another errant throw from the second baseman that allowed Rouse to score the go-ahead run. Amsterdam added one more run in the fifth when Patten singled with one out. Carranza laced a double to left center and Patten trotted around from first to make it 4-2.

On the mound, Paul Milto (Indiana) picked up the win in game one to improve to 2-1 on the season. The loss went to Matt Jones (Manhattan), who dropped to 1-3. In game two, the win went to Mohawks reliever Tim Naughton (NC State) who went two innings, allowed two hits, one run, walked two, and struck out four. Naughton is now 4-1 on the season. The loss went to Collin Duffley (UMass Lowell) as he dropped to 1-1. Chase Haney (Florida State) picked up his first save of the season.

The two teams will meet for a fourth consecutive time Saturday night at Cantine Memorial Field in Saugerties. The Mohawks will look to keep their seven-game winning streak alive, while the Stallions look to end their three-game skid. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
