Joe Genord (South Florida) and Nick Patten (Delaware) both homered late in the game to help the Amsterdam Mohawks rally past the Albany Dutchmen, 7-2, on Monday night at Shuttleworth Park.
With the win, the Mohawks improve to 27-12 on the season, while Albany drops to 20-18.
Despite the loss, it was Albany who struck first. In the top of the third, J.J. Shimko (USC Upstate) led off with a double to right. Cole Malloy (Butler) followed with an infield single before being retired on a Justin Childers (Ohio Dominican) fielder’s choice that moved Shimko to third. After Childers successfully stole second, an errant throw to try to catch Shimko went out of play, allowing both runners to score, making it 2-0 Albany.
Amsterdam was able to get one back in the bottom half. With two outs, Andruw Gazzola (Stony Brook) singled and stole second. Chris Givin (Xavier) beat out an infield single and the play allowed Gazzola to hustle home to make it 2-1.
That score held until the sixth. After Givin reached on an error and Tyler Frank (Florida Atlantic) walked, Genord took a 3-1 pitch over the center field wall off Dutchmen reliever Jack Grabek (Bucknell). The three-run blast made it 4-2 and Amsterdam never looked back.
The Mohawks added three more in the third, with the first two coming via Patten’s two-run shot to left center that made it 6-2. It was Patten’s second of the season. Teddy Cillis (Hofstra) followed with a double and scored one batter later on Tristen Carranza’s (New Mexico State) RBI single to right. Carranza and Gazzola added two hits apiece to pace the offense.
Albany was led by Malloy and Childers, who both went 2-for-4.
On the mound, Cameron Enck (Maryland) improved to 4-1 on the season after going six innings, allowing six hits, two runs (all unearned), and striking out four. The loss was charged to Grabek, who dropped to 3-2. Chase Haney (Florida State) picked up his second save of the season by pitching a scoreless inning and a third.
The Mohawks will look to pick up their 28th win of the season Tuesday night at Cantine Memorial Field where they’ll play the Saugerties Stallions. Albany will have three nights off before returning to Shuttleworth Park to face Amsterdam again on Friday night at 6:35 p.m.
