John McKenna (Army) homered in the ninth and tenth innings to lead the Saugerties Stallions over the Amsterdam Mohawks 5-3 in 10 innings on Monday night in Amsterdam.
The game was a pitchers’ duel for the first four innings as Saugerties starter Mark Meyer (Marshall) and Amsterdam starter Joe LaSorsa (St. John’s) matched scoreless frames.
Amsterdam struck first in the bottom of the fifth. With a runner on second and two out, Liam Wilson (Canisius) singled to bring in Julian Gallup (Niagara), making it 1-0. Dylan Reynolds (Fairfield) followed with an infield single to score Matt Gorski (Indiana) before a throwing error allowed a second run to score on the play to put Amsterdam up 3-0.
Saugerties would finally get on the board in the eighth when Nick Campana (Hartford) roped a leadoff double and scored on an Andrew Taft (Buffalo) single to make it 3-1.
The Stallions continued to chip away when McKenna led off the ninth with a solo home run to center field off to cut it to 3-2. Campana would score to tie the game when Luke Petterson (Minnesota) singled.
In the top of the tenth, McKenna went déjà vu, launching a two run blast to center field to make it 5-3.
Kevin Napoleon (Butler) pitched two scoreless innings to seal the deal and pick up his first win of the season. The loss was charged to Justin Reed (Indiana), who dropped to 0-1.
Saugerties will look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday night when they host the Glens Falls Dragons at Cantine Memorial Field at 7 p.m. Amsterdam will look to bounce back Tuesday night when they host the Albany Dutchmen at 6:35 p.m. at Shuttleworth Park.
