Red Wings Win Thriller Over Amsterdam, 9-7

Box Score

GENEVA, N.Y. - On a warm Saturday evening, the third time that the Geneva Red Wings (9-4) would take the lead over the visiting Amsterdam Mohawks (6-5) would prove to be the charm, as the Red Wings defeated the Mohawks 9-7 at McDonough Park.

Scoring started in the bottom of the fourth inning on an opposite field, 2 RBI Joseph Tassin (Bossier Parish CC) home run. An E5 later in the inning would allow TD Walker (Jacksonville) to cross the plate and make the score 3-0. In the next frame, the Mohawks would tie the game with three runs of their own. A Danny Coleman (HVCC) solo shot would get Amsterdam on the board, and a Liam Wilson (Canisius) 2 RBI single would knot things at 3.

In the bottom half of the fifth, William Simoneit (Cornell) would put Geneva back in front with an RBI double, scoring Mikey Arman (Kenyon). The next three batters would reach base via a walk, extending the lead to 5-3. Justin Etts (NJIT) capped off the scoring half of the inning with a 2 RBI double to make the score 7-3 in favor of the Wings.

Scoring would halt until the top half of the 8th, where an error on the pitcher would allow for two runs for Amsterdam. With the score 7-5 still in favor of the Red Wings, Danny Coleman would come through again with an RBI single. To finish the scoring, Alex Kashgarian (HVCC) would triple home Coleman, tying the game. Relief pitcher Jared Kacso (NJIT) would come on with one out in the inning and a runner on third to get two big strikeouts and keep the game tied.

In the latter half of the 8th inning, Matt Chamberlain (University of New Haven) would put the Wings on top for the third and final time with an RBI double to score Justin Etts. Later in the inning, Matt Collins (Cornell) would double the Geneva lead, coming home on a wild pitch.

Colby Mullins (Andrew College) would close things out for Geneva by retiring the first 3 batters he saw in the ninth. It was Mullins’ second save of the season. Red Wings’ starter Brian Reed threw 7 innings in his third consecutive quality start, giving up three and striking out five. Domenic Nardone (Siena), Jared Kacso, and Colby Mullins all appeared in relief for the Wings.

Geneva returns to action on the road in Utica to take on the Blue Sox on Sunday. The Wings look to improve to 10-4 on the season. Jordan Murphy (1-0, UT Dallas) will start for the Wings.
