Eric Rivera (Florida Atlantic) hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the 13th inning to propel the Amsterdam Mohawks to an extra innings win over the Utica Blue Sox at Shuttleworth Park on Tuesday night. The win gave the Mohawks their 10th straight.
TJ Collett (Kentucky) went 3-7 with 2 R and an RBI, and Liam Wilson stayed hot, going 2-5 with 1 R and 1 RBI. Cole Pursell (Williamette) went 3-6 with 1 HR, 2 RBI and 2 R to lead Utica.
The Blue Sox opened up the scoring in the 1st on a long ball by Pursell, and would add another run in the top of the 3rd on a Pursell RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the 5th, Utica would extend their lead to 4-0 on an RBI single by Zane Harris (Wright St.), and an RBI fielder’s choice by Nathan Thyssen (Concordia (Wis.)). However, Amsterdam would get 3 of those runs back in the bottom of the 5th when Jake Mueller (Wake Forest) scored on wild pitch, Will Holland (Auburn) singled home a run, and Liam Wilson (Canisius) scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-3.
The Mohawks would then take the lead in the bottom of the 6th on a Mueller RBI groundout, and RBI singles by Collett and Wilson, making the score 6-4 Mohawks.
The score would stay that way until the top of the 7th when Nathan Thyssen deposited a 3-run home run over the left field fence to help the Blue Sox regain the lead, 7-6.
The Mohawks would not go down quietly though, because in the bottom of the 9th a Dylan Reynolds RBI single would tie it up at 7.
Extra innings would be pretty quiet until the bottom of the 13th, when with 2 outs, Eric Rivera put a Connor Hurley fastball far into the night over the left field wall to give the Mohawks the win.
The win goes to Brandon Reitz (Florida State), who threw 6 innings of hitless relief, striking out 12 and retiring all 18 batters he faced. The loss goes to Connor Hurley (Concordia (St. Cloud)).
The Mohawks will be off Wednesday before returning to Shuttleworth Park to host the Oneonta Outlaws on Thursday, with that game scheduled for a 6:35 first pitch. The Blue Sox will return home on Wednesday to Donovan Stadium to take on the Elmira Pioneers, with it slated for a 6:30 first pitch.
