Gonnella's 3 Home Runs Power Mohawks Past Trail Blazers, 12-4

Box Score

BOONVILLE, N.Y. - Following a 6-0 shutout over the Onondaga Flames on Tuesday, the Adirondack Trail Blazers returned home to take on the Amsterdam Mohawks and lost 12-4 to the defending PGCBL champions.

The Amsterdam Mohawks began their 12-run victory in the top of the second with a solo shot from Anthony Gonnella (South Florida) deep into the trees in right field.

Gonnella brought the good wood with him again in the fourth with a three-run home run, increasing the lead to 4-0. Later in the inning, John Valente (St. John's) hit a three-run home run of his own and Amsterdam lead 7-0.

Adirondack Got their bats hot for the first time in the contest in the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off single from Tyler Bruno (Iona). After stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Bruno scored off a base hit from Riley Schaefer (Texas Lutheran). Schaefer finished two-for-three on the night, was the only Blazer with more than one hit, and scored off a two-RBI single by Hayden Rappoport (Dartmouth), closing the gap to 7-3.

In the top of the fifth, Gonnella hit his third home run of the night off of Blazers' relief pitcher Logan Walters (Tennessee Tech), another solo shot over the center field wall.  He finished three-for-four, striking out at his next at-bat. Walters was able to strikeout four batters in three innings of work.

From the bottom of the fifth through the eighth, stellar fielding and pitching by the Mohawks limited the Trail Blazers to only one hit with no runs scored during that span.

In the top of the eighth, the Mohawks scored three more runs, with Valente, Chris Hamilton (Stony Brook) and Jake Mueller (Wake Forest) all getting hits and runs scored. Their lead increased to 12-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, Adirondack was able to bring Dugan Darnell (Adrian) around to score after his lead-off walk, but were unable to get any other offense working for them.

Mike Delease (Central Conn. State) recorded his second loss on the season, bringing his record to 0-2. Joe LaSorsa (St. John's) improves to 2-1 with the win.

Adirondack will stay at home Thursday for a doubleheader against the Utica Blue Sox set to start at 5:05 p.m. The Trail Blazers and Mohawks will square off again on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. in Boonville.
