Mohawks Hold Off Dragons, 11-10

By Adam Agresta

Box Score

The Amsterdam Mohawks plated 11 runs on 14 hits hold off a furious comeback from the Glens Falls Dragons, winning 11-10 at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam on Thursday night.  The win gave Amsterdam their 8th straight at home.

Dan Maynard (Maryland) went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored, and Eric Rivera went 2-for-4, hitting a home run in his 4th straight home game.  Anthony Vaglica (LIU Post) went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI’s in the loss.

The Mohawks got the scoring started in the bottom of the 1st when Eric Rivera doubled a run home, and Liam Wilson (Canisius) followed it up with an RBI single to make it 2-0, Amsterdam.  They would add two more in the 2nd on a Dan Maynard RBI single and Rivera would homer in the 3rd before the Dragons would collect their first run in the top of the 4th on a Dan Lowndes (Siena) RBI groundout.

The Mohawks would respond with a pair in the bottom half of the 4th on a Jake Mueller (Wake Forest) RBI double, making it 7-1, Amsterdam.

The Mohawks would add to their onslaught with a 4-spot in the bottom of the 5th, utilizing RBI singles from Will Holland (Auburn) and Dylan Reynolds (Fairfield), before John Valente (St. Johns) plated a pair on a base hit to make it 11-1, Mohawks.

Despite the 10 run deficit, the Dragons didn’t go down easily, scoring 4 in the bottom of the 6th on an Anthony Vaglica RBI single, a Miles Moore (Bucknell) RBI single, and a 2-run RBI double by Jared Morello (St. Joseph’s (VT)) to cut the lead to 11-5.  The Dragons would get it to within 5 after a Vaglica sacrifice fly.

The score would stay that way until the 9th, when in a last ditch effort the Dragons would plate another 4 for Glens Falls, highlighted by a Brian Wasilewski (Buffalo) RBI double to shrink the Mohawks lead to 11-10, but they could not tie it up, ending the game with a runner on 2nd base.

The win goes to Mathieu Gauthier (NC State) in his 1st start at Shuttleworth Park, who went 5.2 innings, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits, striking out 7.  Andrew Aikins (Skidmore) was saddled with the loss.  Brandon Reitz (Florida State) is credited with the save for getting the last out of the game.

The Mohawks (21-7) will be back at Shuttleworth Park tomorrow night to take on the Albany Dutchmen, with gametime slated for 6:35 PM.  The Dragons (9-17) will return home to East field tomorrow night to take on the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs in a doubleheader, with the first game scheduled for 5:05 PM.
