Mohawks Take Seesaw Battle from Pioneers, 11-8

By Adam Agresta

Box Score

Despite the 4th of July ending last Tuesday, the Amsterdam Mohawks continued their fireworks at the plate, scoring 11 runs on 12 hits to power themselves to a win over the Elmira Pioneers, 11-8, in PGCBL action at Shuttleworth Park on Monday night in Amsterdam.

John Valente (St. Johns) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and 3 runs scored, and Dan Maynard (Maryland) went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s, including his 2nd home run of the year to lead the Mohawks.  Colton Evans (UC Davis) went 2-for-3 with 2 BB’s, 1 RBI and 3 runs scored to lead Elmira.

The scoring was started by the Pioneers in the top of the 2nd on a bases loaded walk by Colton Evans (UC Davis) to make it 1-0, but they wouldn’t stop there, adding 4 more runs in the inning on a Marshall Gilbert (John A. Logan) grand slam to left, making it 5-0, Elmira.

That lead didn’t last long, with Amsterdam roaring back in the bottom half of the 2nd with 5 runs of their own, highlighted by RBI singles from Chris Hamilton (Stony Brook), John Valente and Liam Wilson (Canisius) to go along with a run scored on a wild pitch by Hamilton, with those runs knotting the game at 5.

The Mohawks would take the lead in the 3rd on a round-tripper from Dan Maynard, making it 6-5, but the Pioneers would tie it up in the top of the 5th when Colton Evans would walk and come around to score on a wild pitch, making it 6-6.  But, continuing the seesaw battle, the Mohawks would once again take the lead in the bottom of the 5th on a Dan Maynard RBI single to make it 7-6, Mohawks.

Amsterdam would add some insurance in the 6th on an RBI groundout by Eric Rivera (Florida Atlantic), and 2 more when Jake Mueller (Wake Forest), and Liam Wilson came around to score on an error by the Pioneers.

Elmira would get the contest to within 2 runs in the 7th after capitalizing on an Amsterdam error, but the Mohawks would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning when John Valente scored from 3rd on a throw down to 2nd, making the score 11-8, and that is how it would end.

Elliot Anderson (Auburn) picks up the win after providing 3 innings of 1-run relief.  The loss goes to Josh Smith (Kentucky), and Carter Knapek (UMass) picked up the save.

The Mohawks will be off tomorrow before heading to Damaschke Field to take on the Oneonta Outlaws on Wednesday night, with that game slated for a 7:05 start.  The Pioneers will also have tomorrow off before traveling to McDonough Park to take on the Geneva Red Wings, with that game also scheduled for a 7:05 start.
