By Adam Agresta

Box Score

In a battle of faraway foes, the Amsterdam Mohawks took a non-division matchup from the Newark Pilots by the score of 7-3 Thursday night at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam.

The win is the Mohawks 8th straight, and their 20th of their last 21 games.  This was the 1st of only 2 matchups between the teams this season, with the team’s parks being 170 miles away from each other.

Anthony Gonnella (South Florida) went 1-for-3 with 3 RBI’s and a walk, and TJ Collett (Kentucky) hit his 5th home run of the season, this one a 3-run shot to lead the Mohawks.  Will Allocca (Virginia) went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI’s to lead Newark.

The Mohawks got the scoring started in the bottom of the 2nd, bringing in 3 runs on a 2-RBI single by Anthony Gonnella and an RBI single by Dustin Skelton (Mississippi State).  They would add another in the 3rd when Gonnella would walk with the bases loaded to collect his 3rd RBI of the day.

Newark would get a run back in the top of the 4th on a Will Allocca RBI single to shorten the score to 4-1, but the Mohawks would widen their lead even further in the bottom half of the inning when TJ Collett took an Andrew White fastball over the left field wall to make the score 7-1, Amsterdam.

Collett almost had another home run in the 7th, but it was robbed on a terrific catch by Mark McKenna (Canisius) in center field, leaping up over the top of the fence to take a potential run back from the Mohawks.

The Pilots got 2 runs back in the 7th on another RBI single by Will Allocca, but it would not be enough for Newark.

Andrew LaSorsa (Indiana) picked up the win for the Mohawks, going 6 innings, giving up only 1 run on 4 hits, walking 1 and striking out 3..  Andrew White (Buffalo) took the loss for Newark.

The Mohawks will be back home at Shuttleworth Park Friday night against the Albany Dutchmen with the contest scheduled for a 6:35 PM first pitch.  The Pilots will travel to Dunn Field Friday to take on the Elmira Pioneers, with that start slated for 7:05 PM.
