Albany Halts Mohawks Hot Streak, 10-3

By Adam Agresta

The Albany Dutchmen used 10 runs on 14 hits to cruise their way to a PGCBL East Division win by the score of 10 to 3 over the Amsterdam Mohawks at Shuttleworth Park on Friday Nightin Amsterdam.  The loss snaps an 8-game win streak for the Mohawks, who had not lost at home since June 16th.

Nic Estrella went 4-for-5 with 2 RBI’s and 3 runs scored, and Justin Childers (Ohio Dominican) and Zack Durfee (Siena) each hit home runs for the Dutchmen.  Will Holland (Auburn) went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI’s to lead the Mohawks.

The game stayed scoreless until the top of the 3rd, when Justin Childers opened the scoring with a long solo home run to left field, and Brandt Holland (North Alabama) made it 2-0, Dutchmen on a sacrifice fly to right.

Albany would add another run in the top of the 5th on a Trace Tyre RBI single, but the Mohawks would get it right back in the bottom half of the inning when Jake Mueller (Wake Forest) doubled down the right field line to plate John Valente (St. Johns), shrinking the Dutchmen lead to 3-1.

Albany would stretch its lead back to 3 runs in the top of the 6th when Zach Durfee lined a curveball from Ben Anderson (Binghamton) over the left field “sponsor monster” at Shuttleworth park to make the score 4-1, Dutchmen.

The Dutchmen wouldn’t stop there, as in the top of the 8th, a Justin Childers RBI double, a Nic Estrella 2-RBI double, a Brandt Holland RBI single, a Trace Tyre (Ole Miss) sacrifice fly and a Chase Allen (Limestone) RBI single would combine to plate 6 more runs for Albany, making the score 10-1 in favor of the Dutchmen.

The Mohawks would get 2 runs back in the 8thon a 2-RBI double by Will Holland, and a Jake Mueller RBI single would cut the lead to 10-4, but it would prove to not be enough for Amsterdam.

The win goes to Matt Pierce (Siena), who went 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 8 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1.  The loss goes to Matheiu Gauthier (NC State), who gave up 2 runs on 4 hits in 4 innings of work.

The Mohawks and Dutchmen won’t have to wait long to meet again, as they will clash tomorrow, this time at Siena Field, with the first pitch slated for 5:05 PM.
