Mohawks Bats Come Alive, Split Doubleheader

By Adam Agresta

After dropping Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Utica Blue Sox by the score of 4-3, the Amsterdam Mohawks bounced back with a vengeance to take game 2, 11-3 at Shuttleworth Park on Wednesday in Amsterdam.  Since it was a doubleheader, both games went only 7 innings.

For Utica in Game 1, Zane Harris (Wright State) went 1-for-3 with a home run and 2 runs scored, and Kyle Norman (Buffalo) went 2-for-3.  Eric Rivera (Florida Atlantic) went 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Mohawks.

In Game 1, the scoring was started by a Zane Harris long ball, making it 1 to 0.  It would stay that way until the top of the 4th, when Eric Rivera slapped an RBI single to tie it up at 1, and came around to score later in the inning on an error, giving the Mohawks a 2-1 lead.

Amsterdam would add another run in the 5th to make it 3-1, but Utica would come roaring back in the bottom of the 6th, scoring 3 runs highlighted by a Matthew McDermott (William & Mary) RBI single that made it 4-3, Blue Sox, which ended up being just enough.

Louie Varland (William & Mary) picked up the win for Utica, going all 7 innings, allowing 3 runs, all of them earned, on 8 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 8.  Ben Anderson (Binghamton) took the game 1 loss.

Leading Amsterdam in Game 2 was Anthony Gonnella (South Florida), who went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Dylan Reynolds (Fairfield) who had an RBI triple.  Devon Garcia (Ohio) went 2-for-3 for Utica in the Game 2 loss.

In Game 2, the Blue Sox picked up where they left off, scoring 3 runs in the top of the 1st, highlighted by an RBI double by Devon Garcia to put the Blue Sox up early, 3-0.

Same as in Game1, the Mohawks wouldn’t strike back until the bottom of the 4th, when a bases loaded walk to Julian Gallup (Niagra) got Amsterdam on the board, and John Valente followed it up with a 2-RBI single to tie it up at 3.

The Mohawks would take an emphatic lead in the 5th, adding 8 runs to take an 11-3 lead, highlighted by an RBI triple from Dylan Reynolds and RBI singles from Anthony Gonnella (South Florida), Jake Mueller (Wake Forest) and Dan Maynard (Maryland).

The Mohawks will travel to East Field Friday night to take on the Glens Falls Dragons in a doubleheader, with Game 1 slated for 5:00 PM.  The Blue Sox will travel to Siena Field to play a doubleheader of their own against the Albany Dutchmen, with Game 1 scheduled to start at 3:00 PM.
