The Amsterdam Mohawks used extra-base hits and took advantage of sloppy pitching to rout the Capital City Reds, 14-4, on Thursday night at Shuttleworth Park. The blowout win comes after Amsterdam only managed 1 run in a 2-1 loss at Glens Falls, splitting a home-and-home series with the Dragons.
Elvis Peralta Jr. (Marshall) paced the Mohawks at the plate, going 3-for-5 with 5 RBI’s, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Chris Lanzilli (Wake Forest) also homered for Amsterdam, reaching base in all 5 of his at-bats. Kosta Kafes (Alderson Broaddus) went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Reds.
Amsterdam took the early lead in the bottom of the 1st on 3 walks and a hit-by-pitch, scoring 2 runs without recording a hit. Capital City got a run back in the 2nd on a throwing error and took a 3-2 lead on a 2-RBI double by Jackson Dietel (Cloud County CC) in the top of the 3rd.
However, Sam Praytor (Alabama) scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the 4th to tie it at 3, then Toby Welk (Penn State Berks) roped a 2-RBI triple into the right-center field gap, giving the Mohawks a lead that they would never relinquish.
Amsterdam would plate 8 insurance runs in the 5th inning, highlighted by a grand slam home run from Peralta Jr. and a 2-run home run from Lanzilli. Amsterdam and Capital City each plated one more run, but the result had already been decided.
The win for the Mohawks goes to Brad Smith (Fulton Montgomery CC), as he threw 3 innings of scoreless ball, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out one. The loss goes to Troy Clarke (Carleton).
The Mohawks will host the Albany Dutchmen at Shuttleworth Park for the 1st time this season on Friday, with 1st pitch set for 6:35 PM.
