Dragons Defeat Mohawks 5-3

Glens Falls, NY – James Varela (LIU Post) gets the start for the Dragons and faces off against Zane Stephens (Mississippi State) for the Amsterdam Mohawks. The Glens Falls Dragons enter the night with a record of 4-3 and the Amsterdam Mohawks enter the night with a record of 3-3.

In the top of the first James Varela (LIU Post) began the inning with a strike out, then forced two fly outs to end the top of the first stranding a man on first base. Zane Stephens (Mississippi State) take the ball in the bottom of the first inning. Leading off the bottom of the first, Nick Kondo (University of Albany) flies out to right field to lead off the inning. Up second is Nate Cobb (Malone University) who hits a line drive to center field for the Dragons first hit of tonight’s contest. Stephens (Mississippi State) retires Phoenix Hernandez (Southern New Hampshire University) and Josh Arndt (Cornell University) to cap off the first inning.

In the top of the second James Varela (LIU Post) retires the side with two infield fly outs and a strike out. Zane Stephens (Mississippi State) retires the side in the bottom of the second inning,

In the top of the third inning, Jaxon Wenstrom (Hudson Valley Community College) leads off the inning with a triple. James Varela (LIU Post) responds with two strike outs before Michael Ludowig (Wake Forest) hits a single, scoring the run from third base. Varela (LIU Post) gets a fly ball to center field to end the top of the third. Brian Hart (Marist College) and Dan Coleman (Cortland) lead off the bottom of the third with a fly balls to third base and shortstop. Nick Kondo (University of Albany) draws a walk to keep the inning alive for the Dragons and steals second base but Nate Cobb (Malone University) watches the third strike to end the third inning.

James Varela (LIU Post) takes the ball for the top of the fourth inning and serves up a walk to the lead off batter and a single to Toby Welk (Penn State Berks). Varela responds with a strike out and Vaglica (LIU Post) catches the runner stealing third base for the second out of the inning. James Varela (LIU Post) serves up a strike out to end the top of the fourth inning. Phoenix Hernandez (Southern New Hampshire University) leads off the inning for the dragons with a fly ball to the shortstop. Josh Arndt (Cornell University) responds with a double with Anthony Vaglica (LIU Post) coming to the plate. Vaglica (LIU Post) rips a single into left field and moves Josh Arndt (Cornell University) to third. Matt Hamel (Siena College) sends a fly ball to center to score Josh Arndt (Cornell University) to tie the game. Vaglica (LIU Post) gets caught stealing to end the bottom of the fourth.

Shane Barringer (Siena College) takes the mound in relief for James Varela (LIU Post) in the top of the fifth inning. Barringer (Siena College) forces a fly ball to right field, hit by pitch, strikeout, and a ground out to first to end the top of the inning. Danny Ryan (Fairfield University) leads off the bottom of the fifth inning for the Dragons as Brooks Knapek (UMass) takes the mound for the Mohawks. Danny Ryan (Fairfield University) leads off the inning with a single up the middle. Danny Ryan (Fairfield University) advances to third on a wild throw from the catcher. Nick Kondo (University of Albany) sends a single to right field to score Danny Ryan (Fairfield University) to put the Dragons ahead of the Mohawks 2-1.

Shane Barringer (Siena College) returns to the mound for top of the sixth inning. Barringer (Siena College) walks the first two batters he has faced and Coleman (Cortland) commits an error and Amsterdam ties the game. Infield turns a nice double play to end the top of the sixth. Josh Arndt (Cornell University) leads the way for the dragons with a one out walk. Vaglica (LIU Post) scorches a line drive over the second baseman’s head to move Arndt (Cornell University) into scoring position. That single ends Knapek’s (UMass) night and Zack Durant (Herkimer Community College) comes into relief. Matt Hamel rips a single between first and second to drive a run in to put the Dragons ahead 3-2. Dragons move ahead 4-2 after a throwing error from the catcher. Dragons end the inning ahead of Amsterdam with a score of 5-2.

Shane Barringer remains on the mound to begin the top of the seventh inning. Barringer retires the side in order to end the top of the seventh inning. Nick Kondo (University of Albany) leads off the inning with a walk. Nate Cobb (Malone University) grounds out to the pitcher moving the runner into scoring position. Hernandez (SNHU) flies out to end the inning.

Barringer (Siena College) remains in the game at the top of the eighth. Michael Ludowig leads off the seventh with a single to centerfield. Another single by Richie Barrella (Manhattan) knocks Barringer (Siena College) out of the game. Garrett Bailey (Cornell University) enters the game for the Dragons with men on first and second with no outs. Bailey (Cornell University) walks the first batter he faces to load the bases. A pass ball gives the Mohawks one run to make the score 5-3 Dragons. That ends Garrett Bailey’s (Cornell University) night and in comes Christian Allegretti (College of St. Thomas Aquinas). Allegretti (College of St. Thomas Aquinas) gets Bailey (Cornell University) out of the jam. Dragons lead 5-3. Leading off for the Dragons in the bottom of the eight is Josh Ardnt (Cornell University). Arndt (Cornell University) leads off the inning with a single past the third baseman. Hamel (Siena College) and Danny Ryan (Fairfield University) are retired to end the inning

Christian Allegretti (College of St. Thomas Aquinas) out on the mound for the top of the 9th inning for the Dragons. Allegretti closes out the game and the Glens Falls Dragons defeat the Amsterdam Mohawks 5-3.
