Dragons Top Mohawks 5-1

Box Score

Glens Falls, NY-After a rainout the night before, the Glens Falls Dragons were back in action at East Field Monday night as they met PGCBL East Division rival Amsterdam on a perfect evening for baseball. Glens Falls scored three times in the seventh and two in the eighth to earn a 5-1 victory.

Amsterdam scored first off of Glens Falls starter James Varela (LIU-Post) in the top of the second.  With one out Ben Rhodes (Herkimer) singled and  Chris Lanzilli (Wake Forest) followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Varela then issued back to backs to force Rhodes in to make it 1-0.

Meanwhile Amsterdam starter Trip Lockhart (Kentucky) was in control. Although he gave up five walks and saw the Dragons load the bases twice, Lockhart always seemed to work himself out of harm's way. He went five innings, giving up just three hits while striking out six and walking five. Brendan Coffey (Sacred Heart) came on in relief in the sixth.

Varela also settled down after yielding the early run to the Mohawks. He went five innings, giving up three hits, while striking out eight and walking three before giving way to Shane Barringer (Siena).

Glens Falls finally got things going in the bottom of the seventh against Nick DeBrino (Canisius). The Dragons loaded the bases with no one out on three straight walks by DeBrino. Ryan McLinskey (Seton Hall) then came in facing a difficult situation. Glens Falls tied the game 1-1 on an RBI groundout by Nate Cobb (Malone). Dan Ryan (Fairfield) then hit a grounder that appeared to be the second out of the inning, but Brian Hart (Marist ) got caught in a rundown between  third and home, eventually getting back safely as Ryan reached on a fielder's choice. Josh Ardnt (Cornell) then nailed an RBI single up the middle to score two runs giving Glens Falls the 3-1 lead.

Glens Falls tacked on a little insurance in the bottom of the eighth, scoring one run on a wild pitch and a second on an RBI groundout by Cobb to make it 5-1.

Glens Falls coach Cam Curler  turned the game over to his set up man Heriberto Cassasola (Reinhardt) in the eighth and closer Christian Allegretti (St. Thomas Aquinas) in the ninth to preserve the win. Cassasola had a three up three down inning in the eighth.

Barringer (3-1) earned the win for Glens Falls. Coffey (0-1) suffered the loss for the Mohawks.

Glens Falls is 10-8 on the season. Amsterdam falls to 9-8.
