Box Score
The Amsterdam Mohawks took advantage of a scoreless start from Zack Durant (Herkimer), to go along with a strong effort from their bullpen to take down the Glens Falls Dragons in an East Division matchup on Thursday night at Shuttleworth Park.
Durant went 5.0 innings, giving up no runs on just 2 hits, walking 3 and striking out 4. Blake Espinal (Seton Hall) and Ryan McLinskey (Seton Hall) then combined to throw 4.0 innings of scoreless relief, giving up a combined 3 hits and striking out 6.
Joe Genord (South Florida) led the Mohawks at the plate with a 2-run home run, while Richie Nizza (FAU) went 2-for-3 with a single, double and a walk. Josh Arndt (Cornell) went 2-for-4 for the Dragons in the loss.
The game was mainly a pitcher’s duel until the bottom of the 6th, when Jake Hammon (Morehead St.) got hit by a pitch, and Joe Genord put a pitch over the left field wall to give the Mohawks a 2-0 lead. Ben Rhodes (Herkimer) followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3.
In the bottom of the 8th the Mohawks tacked on 2 more, after some nifty baserunning by Matt Padre, who scored off of an error and Richie Nizza, who scored on a delayed double steal stole home, brought the score to 5-0 Amsterdam.
The win goes to Espinal, while GF starter Anthony Ethington takes the loss.
Glens Falls returns home tomorrow to face Oneonta, while the Mohawks will face the Albany Dutchmen at home in a battle for an outright hold of 1st place in the division as we approach the halfway point of the season. First pitch at Shuttleworth Park for the Mohawks is at 6:35 PM.
