Box Score

The Amsterdam Mohawks took a lead in the second inning but could not hold onto it, as a late home run resulted in a 6-3 loss to the Glens Falls Dragons in PGCBL action on Tuesday night at Shuttleworth Park. The Dragons had some fireworks of their own to get the win on July 4th eve at Shuttleworth making use of the long ball.

The Mohawks’ starter, Trip Lockhart (Kentucky) went 5 innings, giving up 1 run, but it was unearned. He gave up 5 hits and only 1 walk, adding on 5 strikeouts. The Dragons’ starter, Sam Fusco (UMass Lowell) went only 2 innings giving up 2 runs, only 1 of them earned. He allowed 0 hits but let up 6 walks on just 3 strikeouts.

Phoenix Hernandez (Southern New Hampshire) was the hero of the night for Glens Falls as he got 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, his first hit counting the most as the grand slam ended up being the game winner. Hernandez also walked once, finishing 2-4 with a walk, a home run, and 4 RBIs.

Ben Rhodes (Herkimer CC) of the Mohawks showed off his control at the plate, drawing 3 walks, going 0-1 with a run scored on the night. Richie Barrella (Manhattan) went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the loss.

The Mohawks took advantage of 5 straight walks and an error in their half of the second and scored 2 runs on no hits. Shane Muntz (Wake Forest) got a walk with the bases loaded to tally an RBI. The other run, which was unearned, came off the bat of Mike Antico (St. Johns) who was out on a pop-out; however, the Dragons threw the ball away and Antico lucked into an RBI.

Glens Falls got one in the top of the 3rd, when they put together three straight singles. The last one, hit by Nick Kondo (UAlbany) resulted in a run as the runner, Justin Rouse (Bellarmine), was able to score off a throwing error to pull within one of the lead. The Dragons then took over the lead in the top of the 7th as Phoenix Hernandez hit a grand slam home run to go up 5-2 late in the game.

The Mohawks got a run closer in the 8th off of a Richie Barrella single, but it was not enough as pitcher Christian Allegretti (St. Thomas Aquinas) of Glens Falls managed to get out of the jam. The Mohawks put the tying run at the plate in the 9th but were unable to complete the comeback.

The win goes to Christian Allegretti, while the loss goes to Ryan Falls (Marshall).  Heriberto Casasola (Reinhardt) recorded the save. The final score was 6- 3. The Mohawks are away at Oneonta tomorrow night with a 7:05PM start time. They return home Saturday to face Oneonta at 6:35PM. The Dragons are off tomorrow but will return home on Thursday to East Field to take on the Adirondack Trail Blazers.
