The Amsterdam Mohawks beat the Glens Falls Dragons 9-8 at Shuttleworth Park. The Mohawks were able to take a commanding lead after 2 innings before allowing the Dragons to tie it. However, the Mohawks would eventually get the win, scoring 3 in their last two frames at the plate. With the win, the Mohawks keep their 1.5 game lead in the Eastern Division of the PGCBL, with now 10 games left in the regular season for Amsterdam.
Tanner Allen (Miss St.) had a big night for the Mohawks as he went 2 for 4 with a walk. He hit a double and a home run, recording 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Mike Antico (St. John’s) also scored 2 runs on 3 hits in 5 at-bats. Michael Ludowig (Wake Forest) also went 2 for 4 but scored 2 runs and got 2 RBI.
The Dragons spread their hitting pretty evenly, but of note was a nice night by Josh Arndt (Cornell) going 2 for 5, with an RBI, and Nick Kondo (UAlbany) who went 1 for 3 with a walk, a run scored and a pair of stolen bases. Phoenix Hernandez (SNHU)
Amsterdam jumped out over the first 2 innings to a 6-0 lead. The Mohawks were able to string together 3 hits to start the game. The third of those hits broke the early tie as Michael Ludowig brought in 2 runs. Then, all-time Mohawks RBI leader Joe Genord (USF) hit a double to score Ludowig. In the final inning. In the following inning, a 3 run home run by Tanner Allen pulled the Mohawks into a 6-0 lead.
In the 3rd inning, the Dragons capitalized on 2 errors and a passed ball to score 2 runs. In the 5th inning a 2 out double by Brian Hart (Marist ’18). Hart was followed by a single off the bat of Phoenix Hernandez, scoring 1 and Hernandez would eventually come around to score after a stolen base and a passed ball.
The Mohawks had been held quiet for the better part of 5 innings before they were able to score 2 runs in the 7th. Ludowig and Shane Muntz (Wake Forest) both got on base and would come around to score using a Justin Foscue (Miss St.) sacrifice fly and a throwing error by replacement catcher Brian Quezada (St Joseph’s- VT).
The Dragons nearly came back, scoring 2 in the top of the 9th, scoring one on a single by Josh Arndt, but were unable to complete the comeback, only score 2 of the 3 runs needed to tie it up. The game would finish with a final score of 9-8.
Dale Stanavich (Marshall) will get the win and Erick Lopez (Avila) will get the loss. Blake Espinal (Seton Hall) got the save. The Glens Falls Dragons will face the Oneonta Outlaws tomorrow in Glens Falls. The Mohawks are off tomorrow before returning home to face the Saugerties Stallions on Saturday with a start time of 6:35 pm at Shuttleworth Park.
