While it took a 2-hour delay to make sure there would actually be a first-round game for the Amsterdam Mohawks to play tonight as they faced the Albany Dutchmen. The wait was well worth it for Mohawk fans as Amsterdam would beat Albany by a score of 9-8. The Mohawks’ huge second inning put them in front before they fell behind and had to make a comeback, eventually walking off the game in the bottom of the 9th.
Justin Wright (St. John’s) led the way for the Dutchmen, going 2 for 4 with a double and a game-tying 3 run home run. Nick Estrella (Azusa Pacific) went 2-4 with a walk, scoring a run. For the Mohawks, Tanner Allen (Miss St.) went 2 for 5, using 2 doubles including one that scored 3 in the second to help the Mohawks jump out to an early lead. He also had a run scored. Jake Hammon (Morehead St) went 1 for 4, drawing a walk, getting an RBI, and 2 runs scored including the game-winning run.
The Mohawks would get on the board quickly in first 2 innings, putting up a run through Mike Antico (St. Johns) in the first. Antico would walk, then scored on an Albany error, trying to catch Michael Ludowig (Wake Forest) stealing second. The game would seemingly get blown open by the Mohawks in the second inning, as the Mohawks would put up 6 runs against Deaven Phillips (Tampa). The Mohawks batted around the order, as Tanner Allen (Mississippi St) had a 3 run double in the inning, as well as an RBI single by Jake Hammon (Morehead St).
The Dutchmen would come back with 4 runs in the top of the third, including a 3 run home run off the bat of Cameron Masterman (Louisville). The Dutchmen would tie the game up with a 3 run home run in the top of the fourth inning of the bat of Justin Wright.
In the top of the 5th inning, the Dutchmen would score all the way from first on a wild pitch, due to a throwing error by Shane Muntz (Wake Forest), taking the lead. The Mohawks tied up the game in the bottom of the 6th on the RBI single by Justin Foscue (Miss St).
All was quiet until the bottom of the 9th where the Mohawks would load the bases before a wild pitch scored Jake Hammon for the game-winning run.
Teddy Sabato (Manhattan) would record the win, while Nick Bird (UAlbany) takes the loss. With the win Amsterdam advances to the semi-finals and will play Watertown later tonight at 6:35pm. Albany’s season is over with the loss. The final score was 9-8.
