Lockhart, Zayicek Help Cruise To A 9-3 Victory Over Dragons

By Jon Sargalis

Box Score

The Mohawks kicked off the 2019 season with a 9-3 victory over the Glens Falls Dragons at East Field Friday night.

Returning Mohawk Trip Lockhart (Kentucky) started and dominated the Dragons as he didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning. He finished with 7 strikeouts in 4 innings and only allowed 1 hit and 1 walk while keeping Glens Falls off the board.

The Mohawks offence started fast as Rook Ellington (Kentucky) led off the game with a single, Dalton Reese (Tennessee) followed with a double and J.D. Mundy (Radford) followed with sac-fly to give Amsterdam a 1-0 lead. Timely hitting and Glens Falls miscues lead to the Mohawks scoring 4 runs in the fourth and 3 in the fifth as the Mohawks took an 8-0 lead. Sam Zayicek (High Point) was the catalyst with 3 hits and 3 runs scored. He started the fourth inning rally with a leadoff double and put the icing on the cake in the ninth with a leadoff home run. Dylan Buck (USF) also added a 2-run triple in the 5th and scored twice.

The Dragons scored 2 in the sixth and 1 in the eighth as Ryan Cardona (Marist), Chase Daniels (Kentucky) and Tyler Stafflinger (NJIT) closed out the game for the 9-3 win.

On Saturday the Mohawks will host the Saugerties Stallions at 6:35. Saturday is Fireworks Night sponsored by McDonald’s and DHL and will also feature pregame music, the Sticker Mule Magnet Schedule Giveaway, the Dr. Rao Dedication and Fonda Night.
