19 Strikeouts Power Mohawks Over Rapids, 8-3

By Ian Classen

The Amsterdam Mohawks defeated the Watertown Rapids by a score of 8-3 Saturday evening.

The Mohawks hit three home runs in the second inning and wouldn’t lose the lead for the rest of the evening.

After the Rapids tied the game in the top half fourth, the Mohawks would answer with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning, and swim away from the Rapids on their way to earning their eighth straight win.

The combined pitching efforts of Will Gambino (Kentucky), Ryan Cardona (Marist), Chris Barazza (New Mexico State), and Dylan Smith (Alabama) no-hit the Rapids for five innings after Trip Lockhart (Kentucky) went four innings, allowing three runs and only five hits, striking out eight batters. The Mohawk pitchers had a combined nineteen strikeouts throughout the game.

Max Costes (Maryland) had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4, getting hit by a pitch, and being a triple short of the cycle. His deep home run over the Great Wall of Amsterdam in left field in the second inning opened the games scoring, while adding on an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Kevin Jimenez (New Mexico State) and Michael Turconi (Wake Forest) also hit solo home runs in the bottom half of the second inning, giving the Mohawks an early 3-0 lead. Watertown’s Derek Kasperzyk (Quinnipiac) hit a two-run home run in the third and would add one more on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to tie the game. A two RBI single by JD Mundy (Radford) would give the Mohawks a 5-3 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

Trip Lockhart earned his second win for the Mohawks, while James Krick (Hillsdale) took the loss for the Rapids.

Amsterdam’s next game is Sunday night at Cantine Field against the Saugerties Stallions, searching for a ninth straight victory.
