Mohawks Walk-Off Dutchmen on Friday

By Ian Classen

Box Score

The Amsterdam Mohawks took a close game against the Albany Dutchmen Friday night by a score of 3-2. After erupting for 16 runs last night against the Geneva Red Wings, the Mohawks pitching had its turn to shine against the Albany offense. While it didn’t have a powerful Mohawk offense to help back their arms, they only allowed two runs to the Dutchmen and put in a good performance. The offense ended up barely putting up enough runs, only scoring two in the first inning and one in the ninth inning.

Eric Cerantola (Mississippi St.) got his first start for the Mohawks, going three innings, allowing only a run and a hit, while striking out four and walking four as well. Ryan Cardona (Marist) would put in three solid innings as well for the Mohawks not allowing any runs while striking out five batters.

Albany’s Nick Grabek (Fairfield) went six innings, allowing only two runs and six hits. He would put in a very good pitching performance but left the game on the hook for the loss. Mitchell Henshaw’s (St. John’s) RBI single tied the game up for Albany in the top of the 7th inning.

JD Mundy (Radford) provided the two Mohawk runs in the first inning on an RBI single. He went 2 for 4 for the day, also hitting a double in the third. Max Costes (Maryland) stayed hot as well, going 2 for 4 with a single and a double. Kevin Jimenez (New Mexico St.) drew the game winning walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give the Mohawks the win.

Danny Watson (VCU) got the win for the Mohawks while Jacob Steinberg (Ole Miss) took the loss for Albany. The teams play again tomorrow evening, this time at Connors Field in Albany.
