Poteet Leads Mohawks Over Rapids

DJ Poteet (Wake Forest) was a double shy of the cycle Monday night in Watertown as the Amsterdam Mohawks defeated the Rapids 12-3.

Poteet opened the scoring in the second inning with a stand-up triple to right center that scored Mitch Hartigan. Sam Zayicek followed with a bunt single that drove in Poteet as the Mohawks lead 2-0 after 2.

In the third inning, each team scored a run on a sacrifice fly as Michael Turconi drove in Kevin Jimenez for the Mohawks and Vinny DeRubeis drove in Derek Kasperzyk for the Rapids as the Mohawks lead 3-1.

DJ Poteet lead off the fourth inning with a home run. Paul Franzoni walked and Landon Jordan was hit by a pitch and both scored when Dalton Reese hit a double off the right fielder as the Mohawks took a 6-1 lead.

In the sixth inning, Richie Barrella had a pinch-hit RBI single that scored Sam Zayicek and Barrella scored on a Kevin Jimenez single to put Amsterdam up 8-1.

In the bottom of the inning, Watertown strung together a pair of 2-out singles and scored a run of Mohawks starter Bryce Brock who had a very strong outing. Brock went 6 innings, allowed 2 runs on 6 hits with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.

Rye Gunter replaced Brock in the seventh inning. After striking out the first 2 batters, Derek Kasperzyk reached on a dropped third strike. Gunter walked the next batter and then struck out the following batter to complete the rare 4 strikeout inning.

K.C. Howe pitched the eighth inning and allowed 1 run to score as the Mohawks lead 8-3 going into the ninth inning.

In the ninth inning the Mohawks scored 4 more runs as Geordon Blanton hit a 2-run single that scored Mitch Hartigan and Michael Turconi. Blanton scored on a Sam Zayicek single and DJ Poteet, who reached on a single, scored on a Richie Barrella ground out as the Mohawks took a 12-3 lead.

Dylan Smith shut the door in the ninth as the Mohawks came away with the 12-3 win. Amsterdam improved to 29-8 while Watertown fell to 15-22. Bryce Brock earned his second win as he's now 2-0 on the season.

The Mohawks are back in action Tuesday night against the Albany Dutchmen as they'll complete a suspended game at 5:00 and play their regularly scheduled game at 6:35.
