After being rained out last night in Mohawk Valley, the Mohawks were able to open the 2021 season at home with 2-1 victory over the Albany Dutchmen.
Teddy McGraw (Wake Forest) who was a returning player from the 2020 team got the Opening Day start for the Mohawks. He was only touched up for 1 run in the second inning as Isaac Humphrey (Louisville) reached on a lead-off walk and scored on a single by Nick Schwartz (St. John's) to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead.
Carter Frederick (Auburn) got the Mohawks first hit and first run of the season as he hit a solo home run in the bottom of second to tie the game at 1.
The game stayed tied at 1 until the sixth inning when Keith Jones (Washington St.) singled, stole second and scored on a Brett Coker (M Tennessee St.) double to left to put the Mohawks up 2-1.
Teddy McGraw went the first 3 innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. The Mohawks bullpen went scoreless the rest of the game as James Salemme (Union) went 2.1 hitless innings with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. Shane Harris (Evansville) picked up the win (1-0) as he went 2 innings allowing 3 hits with 5 strikeouts. Matt Gonzales (Barton) went 0.2 innings giving up 1 hit and 3 walks with 1 strikeout and Cam Minacci (Wake Forest) picked up his first save pitching a spotless ninth with 2 strikeouts.
The Dutchmen took the loss despite only giving up 3 hits in the game. Ryan Yerby (RPI) started for the Dutchmen and gave up 1 run on 1 hit and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Freddie Callo (SUNY Ulster) took the loss (0-1) as he allowed 1 run on 2 hits with 3 strikeouts. Tristan Nemjo (Hofstra) went the last 1.2 innings not allowing a hit with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.
The Mohawks are back at home tomorrow night as they face the Glens Falls Dragons at 6:35.
