SAUGERTIES, N.Y. – Crooked numbers in the second, fourth and sixth innings propelled the Amsterdam Mohawks (3-0) to a 8-5 victory over the Saugerties Stallions (3-2) on Sunday night at Cantine Field.
The Mohawks started the scoring with three runs in the top of the second inning. A Brett Young (Siena) double was followed by a double from Slate Alford (Mississippi State) and a single by Jake Reinisch (Wake Forest). Two more singles helped put the Mohawks up 3-0.
Amsterdam tacked on two more in the fourth. Young and Alford drew walks to start the inning and a single from Danny Moshier plated made the score 5-0 Mohawks.
Saugerties responded with five runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth inning. Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases and Colin Mackle (Marist) worked a bases loaded walk for the Stallions’ first run of the night.
Gunner Gouldsmith (Washington State) had an RBI double and then Kip Fougerousse (Indiana) knocked a double as well to tie the game up at five at the time.
Amsterdam then scored three runs in the top of the sixth to jump ahead 8-5 and put the game away for good.
Ben Adams (St. John’s) earned the win for Amsterdam. Adams pitched two-thirds of an innings, giving up two hits, one run and struck out one. Austin Cole (St. Rose) suffered the loss, pitching one inning and giving up two hits and three runs, with no strikeouts.
Brian Yetter (Marist) earned the save for Amsterdam, pitching a perfect ninth inning to secure the win for the Mohawks.
Amsterdam takes on Mohawk Valley tomorrow at 5 and the Stallions have the day off tomorrow before returning to action Tuesday night at Amsterdam. First pitch is at 6:35 and you can stream it live on Facebook.
