The playoffs may begin tomorrow, but for the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs, they began tonight. The fourth seed in the East Division was still up for grabs on the final day of the season. The Boonville Lumberjacks season ended with a .500 record and the DiamondDawgs entered the night with a .500 record. A win and they’re in, a loss and Boonville would get their postseason ticket punched.
The DiamondDawgs would score first as Niko Sorice hit a sac-fly to score Ian Oehlschlaeger in the second inning.
From there the Mohawks took over. Jon Young, Jr. tied the game with a single that scored Jake Sparks. Then Peyton Jemison put the Mohawks in front with a 2-run single that scored Brett Rowell and Sebastian Harden to make it 3-1.
Amsterdam would then score a pair of runs in each of the next four innings.
In the third, it was an RBI single by Jake Sparks and an RBI fielder’s choice by Brett Rowell. In the fourth, Bray Touchstone hit a 2-run triple. In the fifth, Jon Young, Jr. reached on an error that drove in Brandon McCraine and Luke Filippi grounded out to drive in Brett Rowell. Finally in the sixth, Brett Rowell and Sebastian Harden each hit RBI singles.
The DiamondDawgs mounted their last-ditch effort to make the postseason in the top of the sixth. Joey Gecewicz entered the game for the Mohawks and gave up a leadoff single to Ian Oehlschlaeger. Then the next two batters were hit by pitches to load the bases. Niko Sorice hit an infield single, and an error allowed 3 runs to score. A hit batter and a single reloaded the bases and a sac-fly by John Calabrese brought home Sorice. Brad Curtis entered the game for the Mohawks and that point and hit the first batter he faced to load the bases again. Jayden Ross hit an RBI single and a balk would bring home Ethan Pues. That brought the score to 9-7, but it would be as close as Mohawk Valley would get.
The 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth made it 11-7 and Brad Curtis was locked in after the shaky sixth inning as he pitched the final 4 innings to earn his first save of the season as he went the final 4 innings.
Brett Rowell and Jake Sparks each recorded 3 hits for the Mohawks and Jayden Ross recorded 3 for the Dawgs.
Sam Falace (1-0) got his first win of the season as the Mohawks finish the season 31-11-2. Jake Beck took the loss to fall to 2-2 as the DiamondDawgs finish the season 21-22-1.
The DiamondDawgs loss means the Boonville Lumberjacks have clinched the final wild card spot in the East Division and will begin the playoffs tomorrow night in Amsterdam at 6:35 PM as the Mohawks will have home field advantage throughout the PGCBL Playoffs.
