Mohawk Valley’s Offense Fuels High-Scoring Victory Over Mohawks
Mohawk Valley exposed Amsterdam's pitching staff, putting 11 runs on the board en route to an 11-6 victory. Amsterdam issued 11 walks in their exhibition game vs All Stars Academy, and their issues on the mound continued against the Diamond Dawgs.
The Dawgs kept Amsterdam on their heels all night in the field with 13 hits, including four extra-base hits. The Mohawks kept things tight in the first five innings, but Mohawk Valley broke through in the late innings.
Just three batters in the Diamond Dawgs earned their first run off an RBI single from Bryon Arias. The Mohawks wasted no time flipping the score in their favor. Amsterdam took a 3-1 lead as Aiden Dill and Gabriel Rivera each delivered RBI singles.
Mohawk Valley chipped away at the deficit with an RBI double from lead-off hitter Erick Diaz in the second. One frame later, the Diamond Dawgs leveled the score at three on an opposite-field double from Arias.
Mohawk Valley continued to slug off Mohawks pitcher Derek Duval for the fourth consecutive inning as Diaz roped a two-run home run over the left field wall to give his squad a 5-3 advantage. The Diamond Dawgs added one more run in the fifth, but Duval limited the damage with a twin-killing double play.
Amsterdam needed a rally, and Rivera delivered. The third baseman crushed a two-run home run to left field, making the deficit only one. The Diamond Dawgs continued to get runners across the plate. Mohawks reliever Sam Falace walked three straight batters with the bases loaded to make the score 9-5.
Mohawk Valley tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning to stretch their lead to 11-5. The Mohawks attempted to put on their rally caps in the eighth putting one run across the plate but the comeback fell short. The Diamond Dawgs handed the Mohawks their first loss of the season, while grabbing their second win.
Amsterdam will travel to Cantline Memorial Field tomorrow to take on the Saugerties Stallions. Last time these two teams faced off, Saugerties defeated Amsterdam 3-2 in 11 innings for the East Division Final. First pitch is set for 6:30.
