Late Rally Not Enough for Mohawks

By Shannon Bickert

Box Score

The Mohawks brought the go-ahead run to the plate in a late rally, but ultimately fell to the Saugerties Stallions 6-5 on Wednesday, June 3.

Tyler Correa led the Mohawks with three hits and an RBI.

The Stallions capitalized on traffic on the base paths to break the ice in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back walks and a wild pitch put two Stallions in scoring position for Michael Labenson who plated both runs. Labenson took advantage, scoring on a wild pitch to give Saugerties the 3-0 lead.

Saugerties continued to tack on, adding two runs on two hits in the third inning to earn a five-run cushion.

The Mohawks got on the board as Trevor Hunter came in relief in the fourth. Anthony DeCesare started the rally with a walk, the first of four consecutive walks that Hunter would deal. Jordan Perry’s RBI fielder’s choice brought in a run, and an error allowed another Amsterdam run. Correa kept the Mohawks rolling with a double down the left field line that scored Perry to cut the deficit to just one run.

Saugerties added to their lead late in the eighth inning. Aiden Schmidt singled to center field to lead off the inning. Nick Croce and Chance Sobbery were both brought aboard to load the bases. On a passed ball. Schmidt came in to score. Tyler Kane escaped further trouble, striking out two to end the frame.

Correa led off the ninth with a single to left center field, bringing up the tying run to the plate. Andrew Ezell followed with a double to score Correa and put the Mohawks within one. DeCesare, the go-ahead run, worked a walk to put two runners on for Amsterdam. Despite the late rally, the Mohawks fell short of pushing extra innings, ending the game with a groundout to the pitcher.

Amsterdam falls to 1-3 on the season with the loss.

The Mohawks return home to Rao Family Stadium at Shuttleworth Park to take on the Utica Blue Sox the Thursday, June 4. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
