3 Homers Power Mohawks Over Blue Sox

The Amsterdam Mohawks hit 3 home runs and held off a late rally by the Utica Blue Sox to secure a 7-5 victory on Thursday night at Rao Family Stadium in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam got off to a quick start as Aiden Dill hit a 2-run triple to right center to open the scoring and then scored on a single by Anthony DeCesare to make it 3-0.

The homers started in the fourth inning as Levi Nickoli led off the inning with a solo shot. That was followed by an Anthony DeCesare homer in the fifth as the Mohawks extended the lead to 5-0.

Mathis McKenna started for the Mohawks and pitched 5 scoreless innings allowing 2 hits and 4 walks with 4 strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.

Mith McKenna out of the game, Utica mounted a rally in the seventh inning as Connor McCartney hit a 2-run double and then scored on a wild pitch. RJ Thomae grounded out and drove in  Ethan Madison to cut the Mohawks lead to 5-4.

In the seventh, Andrew Ezell added a valuable insurance run with a home run and in the eighth James Haughton hit a rope to right field to score Levi Nickoli to make it 7-4.

Mason Veronezi came on in the eighth to secure the 6-out save. With one out in the ninth, Kaden Frei grounded out as RJ Thomae scored, but Veronezi was able to strike out the next batter to end the game for the 7-5 victory.

The Mohawks improved to 2-3 while the Blue Sox fell to 3-2. Amsterdam will travel to Glens Falls on Friday for their first game of the season against the Dragons starting at 7:00 at East Field.
