Mohawks Mash Their Way to Win Over Utica

By Nate Shoemaker

Box Score

Amsterdam’s offense continued its dominance at the plate in a 14-4 win over Utica. Aiden Dill drove in three runs and Chris McLaughlin tallied four RBIs, powering the Mohawks to their third straight win over the Blue Sox.

The Mohawk pitching staff shut down the Utica bats on Wednesday. Mathis McKenna went four innings, surrendering two runs. The staff held Utica to just four runs, their second lowest total of the season.

The Blue Sox struck early with their first road home run of the season. Blue Sox’s Jack Sweeney finished off his 11-pitch at-bat with a blast through the rainy skies. Amsterdam answered back in the bottom half with two runs of their own on RBIs from Andrew Ezell and Gabriel Rivera.

In the second, the runs kept coming for Amsterdam. Chris McLaughlin belted his first home run of the season, and Andrew Ezell laced an RBI double off the left field wall giving Mohawks a 5-2 advantage.

Utica was stuck in the mud against Mohawks pitcher McKenna, he settled in after a rocky first inning, giving up no runs through his next three innings. Amsterdam continued to do damage as left-handed hitter Robert Melo slapped the ball the opposite way for a two-run homer extending the Mohawks lead to 8-2.

As the rain began to come down in the late innings, the Amsterdam pitchers struggled to find the zone. Duval and Peterson combined for four walks, handing Utica two runs. In the bottom half, Amsterdam broke the game open. They added three runs, finished off with a two-run single from McLaughlin. Aiden Dill finished off the mercy rule with a bomb way over the right field fence.

The Mohawks will get a day off before they host the Boonville Lumberjacks on Friday, June 12. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
