Opposite-Field Hitting Ignites Mohawks Past Boonville

By Nate Shoemaker

Box Score

The Mohawks used the opposite field to their advantage in an 11-1 mercy rule win over Boonville. Seven of Amsterdam’s 14 hits were to the opposite field in the victory.

Chris McLaughlin had two RBIs, and Robert Melo drove in three runs, while Amsterdam's pitching staff combined for 15 strikeouts and surrendered just three hits.

A string of opposite-field hits helped Amsterdam gain an early first-inning lead. Andrew Ezell sprinted home on a wild pitch, and Anthony DeCesarse legged out an RBI single, making the score 2-0.

Boonville cut the deficit down to one on a solo home run by Eljiah Negron that barely cleared the left field wall. The Mohawks grabbed their two-run lead back in the bottom half of the third, kicked off by a leadoff triple from Tyler Correa. The offense continued to blossom, adding three more, with a two-RBI double from McLaughlin and an RBI single from Aiden Dill.

Amsterdam got Melo to the plate with an opportunity to break the game open. He smashed a ball off the right field wall for a bases-clearing double, extending the lead to 9-1. On the defensive side, the Mohawks silenced the Lumberjacks as pitchers Warren Miller, Saxon Roberts, and Brendan Shea combined for eight straight strikeouts.

After the sun set over Shuttleworth Park, Correa put away the game with a walk-off infield single, leading to an 11-1 mercy rule. The win marks Amsterdam’s second straight, mercy-rule victory.

The Mohawks hit the road on Saturday, June 13, traveling to Utica to take on the Blue Sox. Amsterdam enters the matchup a perfect 3-0 against Utica this season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. at Murnane Field.
