Gabriel Rivera tied a team record set 13 years ago by driving in 8 runs on Thursday night in an 18-3 victory over the Glens Falls Dragons at Rao Family Stadium.
It was July 30, 2013, when Dylan Smith (Auburn) drove in 8 runs in a 13-3 Mohawks victory over the Adirondack Trail Blazers.
Rivera got right to work in the first inning. Taylor Belza led off the game with his first of 3 hits, Anthony DeCesare was then hit by a pitch and that set the table for Gabriel Rivera’s first 3-run hoke run of the game. That was immediately followed by a Tyler Figueroa home run as the back-to-back home runs set the early tone as the Mohawks were up 4-0 after one.
In the second, Jordan Perry led off the inning with a single and scored on a Taylor Belza double. Gabriel Rivera drove in his fourth run of the game with a sac-fly to score Belza. Tyler Figueroa followed Rivera again and hit a sac-fly that brought home Andrew Ezell to give Amsterdam a 6-0 lead.
In the third, Glens Falls got on the board as David Yorke drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 6-1.
The fourth began with a Taylor Belza double and he scored on an Anthony DeCesare double, then Gabriel Rivera stepped in with two men on again and clubbed his second 3-run of the game for his 7th RBI of the game. Robert Melo would come up later in the inning and double which set up pinch hitter Brady Mills to hit a sac-fly to make the score 12-1.
Tyler Worth hit a 2-run homer for the Dragons in the fifth to make it 12-3, but Gabriel Rivera was due up again in the bottom of the inning and drove in his 8th run of the game with a single that scored Andrew Ezell. That was followed by a Tyler Figueroa RBI double and a Robert Melo 2-run single to make it 16-3.
Brian Carrothers put the final nail in the coffin as he hit a monster home run over the left field fence to make it 18-3 in the sixth as the Mohawks just needed three more defensive outs to invoke the run rule to end the game early.
Grant Nicholson was the winning pitcher improving to 2-0 as he went the first 3 innings, while Warren Miller and Saxon Roberts each pitched 2 innings to close out the game. Roberts was especially dominant as he recorded 5 strikeouts in his 2 innings while allowing 1 hit.
The Mohawks moved to 12-4 on the season and increased the win streak to 7 games, while the Dragons fell to 5-8. Amsterdam will be off on Friday and return to action Saturday to host the Saugerties Stallions at 6:35 PM.
