“This team is relentless. We may be down a couple runs, but we’re going to come back.” Those were Gabriel Rivera’s words after the Mohawks pulled off a come from behind victory by a score of 6-5 at Rao Family Stadium over the Saugerties Stallions Saturday night.
Amsterdam spotted the Stallions a pair of runs in the first two innings as Ryan Recio hit a sac-fly and Cooper Schmidt hit an RBI single.
In the second, the Mohawks tied the game at 2 as James Haughton doubled just past the glove of the diving third basemen and into left field as Robert Melo and Tyler Figueroa scored.
Derek Duval came out of the bullpen in the third inning and shut down the Stallions bats for the next 3 innings as he just allowed one hit during his outing.
In the sixth, Harrison Hicks was called upon to get out of a jam and induced a double play off the bat of Ryan Recio, but it allowed Mason Gazzaway to score as the Stallions gained a 3-2 edge.
Then in the seventh, Nick Croce homered for Saugerties to extend the lead to 4-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Gabriel Rivera stepped in with the bases loaded and took the 3-2 offering and hit a bases clearing double that put Amsterdam up 5-4.
“Just competing, knowing that two strikes he might have the advantage, but I felt all game that I was going to win every AB, every pitch, and I did exactly that” said Gabriel Rivera after the game. He now leads the PGCBL with 28 RBI so far this season after driving in 11 runs in the past 2 games.
In the eighth, Robert Melo hit his fifth home run of the season, tying him with Mohawks teammates Gabriel Rivera and Anthony DeCesare for the league lead and put the Mohawks up 6-4.
In the ninth, the Mohawks traded a run for an out as Magnus Krieger grounded out to second to score Ryan Recio, but Tyler Kane recorded the strikeout to end the game.
The Mohawks have now won their eighth game in a row and improved to 13-4 in the season. The Stallions fell to 8-6 with the loss. Harrison Hicks got the win improving to 2-0, Ryan Mayer took the loss, falling to 1-1 and Tyler Kane recorded his second save of the season.
Amsterdam is off on Sunday and return to action Monday on the road to face the Oneonta Outlaws at 7:00 PM.
