By Jon Sargalis

Box Score

It was a 4 hour and 14-minute marathon of a game. 34 total runs, 33 total hits and 12 extra base hits. The Mohawks came out of this slugfest with a 21-13 victory over the Utica Blue Sox at Murnane Field on Wednesday night.

The game began with the Mohawks spotting the Blue Sox a 4-0 lead. Before recording an out, Anthony Perritano became the first Blue Sox player to hit multiple grand slams in a season.

For a Mohawks team averaging over 10 runs a game, a 4-run deficit didn’t phase the dugout. The offense got going in the second inning and scored in every inning for the rest of the game.

Gabriel Rivera got the party started with a solo homer in the second inning. It was his sixth of the season which tied him with teammate Robert Melo for the league lead. Aiden Dill followed later in the inning with a sac-fly and Tyler Correa hit an RBI single as the Utica lead was already cut to 4-3.

In the third, Taylor Belza hit his second home run of the season, a 2-run shot that put the Mohawks up by a score of 5-4.

Utica fought back in the third. Xavier Smith scored on a wild pitch, Justin Levine hit a 2-run double and RJ Thomae hit an RBI single for the Blue Sox second 4-run inning of the game and took an 8-5 lead.

Unfazed, the Mohawks went back to work in the fourth. Aiden Dill led off the inning with a double and scored on a Tyler Correa triple. James Haughton drove in Correa with a single. Robert Melo singled to drive in Haughton to tie the game and on a throwing error at third, Andrew Ezell got up and scored the go-ahead run to put the Mohawks up 9-8.

In the fifth, it was a Zack Johnson 2-run double. The sixth was a Jordan Perry getting the bat out and slapping a 2-run single and the seventh was Andrew Ezell hitting an RBI single as the lead stood at 14-8.

Utica answered back in the bottom of the seventh as Ethan Madison hit an RBI single and RJ Thomae drew a bases loaded walk as the Blue Sox scored their 10th run of the game but still trailed by 4.

Aiden Dill drove in Taylor Belza in the eighth and Tyler Correa drove in Jordan Perry to get those runs back at the Amsterdam lead became 16-10.

The Blue Sox got one in the eighth on a wild pitch to make it 16-11.

In the ninth, Anthony DeCesare doubled to score Andrew Ezell and then Aiden Dill stepped in with the bases loaded . He hit a ball that dropped in front of the centerfielder that was then misplayed and rolled all the way to the wall as Dill flied around the bases and 4-runs scored as the Mohawks had now put up 21 runs.

In the bottom of the ninth, the fatigue of a 4+ hour game set in as the game appeared to be over twice, but errors prolonged the inning and allowed 2 runs to score for the Blue Sox before the game ended in a 21-13 victory for the Mohawks.

Amsterdam had 10 extra base hits in the game, 7 players recorded multiple hits and 5 had multiple RBI. Andrew Ezell and Aiden Dill each had 4 hits and Dill drove in 5 runs.

Amsterdam has now won 10 games in a row and are now 15-4. Utica falls to 6-11 with the loss. Bryson Treichel was the winning pitcher moving to 2-0 on the season, while Nicholas Pusinelli took the loss falling to 0-1.

The Mohawks are off on Thursday and return to action Friday to host the Boonville Lumberjacks at Rao Family Stadium starting at 6:35 PM.
