Mohawks Six-run First Inning Leads to Victory Over Dragons
The Mohawks scored six runs with two outs in the first inning, leading to a 19-9 win over Glens Falls. Grant Nicholson delivered four and a third efficient innings, striking out eight batters and surrendering just two hits.
Amsterdam got the fans out of their seats, with a six-run first inning as Robert Melo ripped a two-out RBI single and Tyler Figeroua drove in two runs with a single back up the middle. A Dragon's error from Brady Fandl allowed the Mohawks to tack on two more runs, while pitcher Billy Kind struggled with his command.
Nicholson was perfect through the first three innings, facing nine batters and retiring each one of them. Figeroua doubled his RBI counter with a double off the left field wall. Andrew Ezell and Gabriel Rivera drove in runs to help the Mohawks hang another crooked number, scoring eight runs in the third inning.
Brady Mills launched his first home run of the season, delivering the decisive blow, as the Mohawks grabbed a 15-0 advantage. Glen Falls finally got runs on the board against Nicholson in the fifth, when Fandl and Giorgio Pantepinto drove in runs, cutting the lead down to 15-4. The Dragons added two more on a throwing error from Brandon McCraine, making the score 15-6.
Jordan Perry helped Amsterdam snag back their 10-run lead with a solo home run into the right-center gap. Evan Taylor’s walkoff two-RBI single gave the Mohawks the victory and their 10th mercy rule victory of the season.
Amsterdam will stay home on Thursday to host the Utica Blue Sox on Fireworks Night. The Mohawks own a 5-0 record against the Blue Sox this season. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
