Mohawks Prevail in Late Innings Against Troy Haymakers
Mason McCraine attempted to steal third as he slid into third, he turned around to see the ball in left field. McCraine sprinted home and crossed home plate to give Amsterdam an emphatic 12-11 win.
After the Mohawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, the Haymakers struck back with 11 unanswered runs. Amsterdam issued 11 free passes over the course of seven innings, but James Haughton and Mason McCraine’s late game magic carried Amsterdam back for the victory.
For the second straight game, the Amsterdam pitching staff crumbled over a two-inning stretch, giving up 11 runs in the third and fourth innings. The Haymakers’ pitching staff also faltered in the late innings, hitting three batters, allowing the Mohawks to rally from a 7–1 deficit.
Amsterdam loaded the bases in the second inning, and Chris McLaughlin bounced one down the third-base line that got past left fielder Donovan Rhoden. The single cleared the bases, and McLaughlin later came around to score on an RBI groundout by Evan Taylor.
The Haymakers answered back in the third inning with four runs of their own. Geneo Savoca smoked an RBI single into the right field corner, and Dan Barbero Sr brought his teammates home with a three-run home run over the Right Field Skydeck.
Savoca came up again in the following inning with the bases loaded and dropped in a bloop RBI single, as the runners advanced station to station to make the score 6–4. Mohawks pitchers Aiden Scott and Joey Gecewicz struggled to find the zone as they gave up seven free passes in the fifth inning.
Andy Cai gave the Mohawks life with his first hit and RBI of the season, and Brandon McCraine followed with an RBI infield single, cutting the lead down to 11-6. Amsterdam’s offense came alive in the late innings, delivering a bases-loaded opportunity for Haughton.
Haughton delivered a skyscraper that hit off the right field wall, cutting the lead to just one at 11-10. Amsterdam erased an 11-4 deficit to tie the game at 11, when Andrew Ezell came to the plate on a wild pitch.
In the next inning, Mason McCraine scored on the Haymakers fifth error of the game allowing the Mohawks to bounce back after their first loss since June 9.
The Mohawks will travel to Boonville on Friday to play the LumberJacks. Amsterdam leads the season series 2-0. First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m.
